Now that the queen has left out shores it’s safe to discuss the republic once more. Not that Australians are in a hurry to talk about it. There’s just too much respect for our current monarch and no one wants to upset her after all these years of good service and in her twilight years.
Inevitably, however, she will pass away and when she does the debate will re-energise and we shall become a republic. It would therefore make perfect sense to lay the ground work now.
There is no question that the majority of Australians wish we were a republic. We just don’t think about the issue very much. For a while there we did, but then came the referendum debacle and other issues took prominence like climate change, the GFC and getting the kids to and from soccer practice. It’s still in the in-trey somewhere but buried under a pile of other stuff.
